Extended & Character Curriculum

Learning Outside the Classroom

We believe that everyone should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development. This includes external visits, for example to the tennis centre, swimming pool, farms, sea-life centres, local parks or garden centres, as well as external visitors and groups joining us at school for historical re-enactments, theatre productions or special visits from firefighters and farmers. Our wonderful outdoor environment also allows us to offer a range of additional opportunities. Our aim is to provide a happy, stimulating and challenging environment, within and beyond the classroom, in which we can all achieve our full potential.

We incorporate learning outside the classroom throughout our daily curriculum. We are lucky to have such extensive grounds, which have been developed in discussion with the school council and children throughout school, to give a variety of spaces that give children a range of opportunities for exploration, learning and discovery. The children access these spaces when appropriate during lessons as well as playtimes. Outside, you can find:

  • Mud kitchens
  • Bird hide
  • Climbing frames
  • Sensory garden
  • Outside music equipment
  • Quiet areas
  • Sensory exploration space, trim trail
