Learning Outside the Classroom at GHA
Whatever the weather, we love being outdoors! We are very lucky to have a dedicated Forest School area at GHA as well as lots of outside spaces in which to learn, discover and play.
The children can balance, climb, swing and explore in nature. Learning in our Forest School area gives the children the chance to develop new skills and use a range of tools, learning about safety rules and risk assessments. They are also supported to become more confident with solving problems, and when working as part of a team.
We believe that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances. At Gosberton House Academy, learning happens everywhere. Our curriculum is linked so that all subjects such as history, geography, RE and DT lessons come alive for our learners. We nurture our children’s social and emotional development as integral to every part of our learning within and beyond the school day.
Learning Outside the Classroom contributes to our whole school development. We believe that all students should be able to experience the world beyond the classroom safely, whatever their age, or ability. Our wonderful outdoor environment allows us to offer these opportunities to all pupils, and the wider world also creates further opportunities for all. Our aim is to provide a happy, stimulating and challenging environment, within and beyond the classroom, in which we can all achieve our full potential.
Where ever possible, the staff incorporate learning outside the classroom into their daily curriculum. The school has developed the external learning environment with the children to ensure space to explore including:
- theme dens
- den making area
- growing spaces - raised flower and vegetable beds
- activities on the hard surfaces (shapes, numbers) and display posters
- Mud Kitchens
- Bird hide
- Climbing frames
- Sensory garden and bug hotel
- outside music equipment
- reflective space
- Sensory exploration space, trim trail, trampoline
Learning outside the classroom activities are integral to long, medium and short term planning. Each of the curriculum themes include a 'WOW' activity. This may be external visits or visitors.
